Philanthropy
Philanthropy
Philanthropy and Community Service are important aspects to our Panhellenic community. Each chapter has events in each of these areas every term.
All five sororities also have their own specific national and local philanthropies listed below. The Drexel University Panhellenic Council adopted philanthropy is the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation seeks to prevent pediatric HIV infection and to eradicate pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment programs. For more information regarding our philanthropy, please visit the official website, www.pedaids.org
The Panhellenic Council also organizes and participates in many other philanthropic and community service oriented events such as Peanut Butter & Jelly Day, All-Greek Community Service Days, and the University City 5k Run (Nick Pipino Memorial Run).
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Special Olympics:
Special Olympics provides sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with mental retardation. It seeks the prevention of mental retardation by identifying its causes, and helps to improve how society deals with its citizens who have mental retardation. Every year we help the Special Olympics out at their sporting events and raise money to donate to them.
S. June Smith Center:
The S. June Smith Center is located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and is named after Alpha Sigma Alpha member Dr. S. June Smith. The center provides programs of early intervention to help infants and preschool children with developmental and mental delays. We incorporated the S. June Smith Center as our second philanthropy in 1990 and numerous times throughout the year we do arts-and-crafts projects with children from the S. June Smith Center.
Delta Phi Epsilon:
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF):
The official philanthropy of the sorority since 1958, it is the recipient of funds raised by chapters to support research to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for the 30,000 children and young adults afflicted with the disease. A cure for Cystic Fibrosis still had not been found. However, in appreciation of the Sorority’s fundraising efforts, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation named a research fellowship in honor of Delta Phi Epsilon.
Every year DPhiE hosts an all male beauty pageant, Deepher Dude. Deepher Dude is open to all of Campus. Each fraternity or organization is encouraged to have at least one contestant that participates in catagories such as, talent, swimsuit, formal wear, and question and answer. In 2009 we raised over $7000 for the CFF.
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Assocatied Disorders (ANAD):
ANAD has been an additional recipient of out fundraising efforts since 1985. ANAD is a national organization dedicated to alleviating problems of anorexia and other eating disorders. DPhiE is the first international sorority to pledge regular support to an organization concerned with the effects of eating disorders. Every year the sorority holds a Candlelight Vigil to spread awareness about eating disorders.
Delta Zeta:
The Painted Turtle
The Starkey Hearing Foundation:
Delta Zeta's national philanthropy, supported by both collegiate and alumnae chapters, is speech and hearing and The Painted Turtle camp. Delta Zeta's partnerships with and The Painted Turtle and The Starkey Hearing Foundation were announced at the 2006 National Convention. All of these important programs provide additional volunteer and giving opportunities for collegiate and alumnae members.
Delta Zeta has a philanthropic partnership with the Sound Beginnings Program. Chapters also support local and national speech and hearing organizations, such as Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the only four-year liberal arts school in the world devoted wholly to the needs, instruction, and training of young people who are deaf, and the House Ear Institute, which is one of the world's foremost research, teaching, and treatment centers in the field of hearing.
Phi Mu:
Children's Miracle Network (CMN):
Phi Mu is the only sorority to be a corporate sponsor of Children's Miracle Network (CMN). Supporting 170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals nationwide, Phi Mu has raised over $7 million since 1986, improving the quality of life for children everywhere.
Annuallyon campus, Phi Mu hosts the event Wing Fest. Wing Fest is a smaller-scale verison of the popular Philadelphia Wing Bowl. Proceeds raisied from Wing Fest will go to support CMN. In 2008, we raised over $3,000.
Phi Sigma Sigma:
National Kidney Foundation:
Phi Sigma Sigma's national philanthropy is the National Kidney Foundation. This philanthropy was adopted in 1971 because kidney disease was the leading cause of death in women at that time.
In support of our national philanthropy, the Beta Rho chapter hosts a Rock-a-thon every year to raise awareness and funds for the NKF. Last year we raised a significant amount of money for the cause. In 2006, Beta Rho receieved a philanthropy award from Phi Sigma Sigma National Headquarters for having the highest philanthropic donation per sister.
Ronald McDonald House:
Beta Rho has recently adopted a local philanthropy in the past year. We are proud to announce the Ronald McDonald House as our new local cause, located only blocks away at 39th & Chesnut.
The main focus of the McDonald House is providing families who have children in local hospitals, with a home away from home.
